Backgammon is played between two players.

The game has it's roots thousands of years back in history but it got it's present form in the 20th century when the doubling cube was introduced in the game.
There are 24 tongues on the gaming board on which the pieces are moved.
There is a doubling cube the players can use to double the stakes mid-game. Then the opponent has to choose whether to accept the double or to forfeit the game. Cruel but fair.

Is backgammon gambling?

I don't really think it is. It should be considered a skill game. Sure it is played with dices but there are lots of tactical deccisions that has to be made and most often the better player wins. Of course it is not always the case and that is part of what I like about backgammon. It is almost never certain before a game who will win.
